YEA WETLANDS

Public BBQ

The Yea Wetlands present themselves as one of those pleasant surprises that small Australian towns seem to specialise in hiding just around the corner from their main streets. The place manages to be both utterly peaceful and surprisingly alive with bird chatter - a combination that's rather more difficult to achieve than you might think. The walking paths here are mercifully well-maintained, which is fortunate because the initial entrance looks like it's been designed by someone with a grudge against first impressions. Once you push past that unfortunate start and cross the suspension bridge, the wetlands reveal their true character. The 2.5-kilometre circuit proves to be one of those rare walks that doesn't feel like punishment for your sedentary lifestyle. What strikes you most is the wildlife - if you're lucky, you might spot a platypus doing whatever it is platypuses do when they think nobody's watching. The information centre, when it's actually open, offers a three-minute video that's apparently worth watching, though the real entertainment comes from the excellent scones and cream they serve during guided tours. The picnic facilities are perfectly adequate for a quick lunch, though you'll want to bring your own water for cleaning up.
