WOODLANDS STORY PARK

Public BBQ

Woodlands Historic Park sits right on the doorstep of Tullamarine, about ten minutes from the terminal, and both entry and parking are free. I used the BBQs at the Somerton picnic area. Decent tables, toilets nearby, and plenty of open grass for kids to run around on. Shade is patchy and there's nowhere to buy anything once you're past the car park, so take a hat and water. The kangaroos are the real reason to come. I counted dozens grazing out in the open, along with cockatoos and a pair of blue wrens. Go early or late in the day. Friends who turned up at midday saw nothing but rabbits. Afterwards I walked up to the lookout, roughly half an hour each way from the BBQ area. The 700m climb is signed at 45 minutes return and it's steeper than it looks, but you get the city, the grasslands and planes taking off from the top. Dogs are welcome on lead. Gates shut at 4.30pm, so don't leave the walk too late.
