WILLOW BEND RESERVE

Public BBQ

Tucked along Adelaide's Torrens River Linear Park, Willow Bend Reserve proved to be one of those delightful discoveries that locals have been quietly enjoying for decades. The moment I arrived, it was clear why families and fitness enthusiasts flock here - the outdoor exercise equipment draws queues on sunny days, though the wait provides perfect opportunity to observe the remarkable wildlife congregation. What struck me most was the reserve's unexpected biodiversity. A resident koala has taken up residence (apparently unbothered by the steady stream of dog walkers), while cormorants and various waterfowl create quite the spectacle around the water's edge. The more observant visitors might even spot native orchids in season, though sadly some ignore the designated pathways. The BBQ facilities and wheelchair-accessible design make this genuinely inclusive, and the well-maintained paths wind beautifully through what locals rightfully call a "botanical treasure." After 35 years of regular visits, one devoted walker and his succession of four dogs can attest to its enduring appeal. The free tennis courts up the hill are an added bonus, making this Adelaide's best-kept family-friendly secret.
