WALLY FANKHAUSER SPORTS PARK

Public BBQ

Wally Fankhauser Sports Park sits on Musgrave Avenue like a well-maintained secret that locals seem determined to keep to themselves. The oval stretches out in that particularly Australian way - vast enough to make you wonder if they're expecting a small aircraft to land rather than a footy match. The Southport Sharks have claimed this territory, and you can sense their presence in the purposeful way the facilities are arranged. The barbecue areas suggest weekend gatherings where serious discussions about team performance unfold over sausages. Clean toilets - always a relief at sporting venues - and enough parking to accommodate the optimistic crowds that Gold Coast sporting ambitions tend to inspire. It's functional rather than flashy, which somehow feels exactly right.
