WALKABOUT PARK

Public BBQ

Walkabout Park in suburban Chambers Flat delivers that quintessentially Australian combination of practicality and understated charm. The barbecue facilities here are refreshingly straightforward: proper gas plates that actually work, flanked by sturdy picnic tables that have weathered countless family gatherings with admirable stoicism. The playground equipment shows thoughtful design, with enough variety to keep the smaller members of your party occupied while you tend to the serious business of not cremating the snags. What strikes you most is the park's honest suburban character with no pretensions, just decent facilities in a neighbourhood setting where locals clearly know a good thing when they've got it. The grassy areas provide ample space for a proper kick-about, and the mature trees offer genuine shade rather than the token saplings you find at newer developments. It's the sort of place that reminds you why the humble suburban park remains one of Australia's most democratic institutions.
