TOOHEY FOREST PARK

Public BBQ

Tucked away on the quieter side of Toohey Forest Park, this spot delivers a proper dose of Queensland bushland without the crowds. The walk to Pegg's Mountain lookout will test your legs with some genuinely steep bits - more of a proper hike than a casual stroll, which keeps the masses at bay. The basic facilities do the job: electric barbecues and shaded picnic tables, though you'll want to plan your toilet stops elsewhere. Parking's a bit of a puzzle on Toohey Road - you'll find yourself doing an awkward dance with the local shop to turn around - but Evans Road access is more straightforward. What strikes you is how close this pocket of bush sits to suburban life, yet feels genuinely removed once you're on the walking tracks. The views from the lookout won't make postcards, but there's something satisfying about earning them through the undulating terrain.
