TOM DOHERTY PARK

Public BBQ

Tom Doherty Park sits in what remains of Acland, a town that mining was meant to claim but somehow forgot to finish the job. Three houses still stand defiantly among the ruins, creating an oddly surreal atmosphere that's part ghost town, part functioning community. The park itself is a pleasant surprise with well-maintained grounds featuring electric barbecues, clean toilets, and sturdy benches scattered about the gardens. A memorial anchors the space with quiet dignity, while native wildlife treats the area as their personal sanctuary. What makes this place truly special is encountering one of Acland's remaining residents, who might just offer you an impromptu history lesson about their remarkable little town that refused to disappear. It's an ideal spot for a contemplative picnic, though you'll want to bring your own shade on sunny days.
