THOMPSON BEACH SOUTH

Public BBQ

Thompson Beach South is a remote coastal spot known primarily for crabbing. The tide retreats for miles, creating vast flats where visitors rake for blue swimmer crabs. Timing matters here. The best catches happen 40 minutes before sunset during low tide, and you'll need proper rakes and a measure to ensure crabs meet legal size limits. Success varies by season. The walk to water can be substantial when the tide is out, sometimes feeling like a trek to the middle of the ocean. Basic facilities include composting drop toilets (no running water) with hand sanitizer. They're kept surprisingly clean and stocked with toilet paper. A small shelter sits nearby. The beach itself is flat and calm, no surf, making it suitable for quiet walks and exercising dogs. Those unfamiliar with walking trails should know the road leads to a track at the end, and high tide timing significantly affects access and experience.
