TEA GARDENS RESERVE

Public BBQ

Tea Gardens Reserve offers a refreshing escape along the Maribyrnong River, where the urban sprawl gives way to something altogether more civilised. This hilled reserve proves that Melbourne's western suburbs can surprise you - rolling grassy expanses perfect for a barbie, complete with proper picnic tables and bench seats for those who've forgotten their camping chairs. The walking and cycling tracks wind pleasantly through the reserve, connecting to the broader Maribyrnong River Trail system. Fishing enthusiasts line the riverbanks with admirable persistence, while families spread blankets across the open lawns. The wildlife viewing is unexpectedly rewarding - blue tongue lizards bask in the sun, rabbits dart between bushes, and an impressive array of waterbirds populate the river. One does encounter the occasional snake and rather ambitious fly population, though this seems a fair trade for such proximity to nature. What sets Tea Gardens apart is its quieter character compared to busier reserves downstream. The toilets are a practical 300 metres away at the main reserve, and street parking provides easy access. It's the sort of place where city dwellers rediscover why picnicking was invented.
