TALBINGO DAM

Public BBQ

Talbingo Dam at O'Hares campground sits along the Tumut River, accessible via one of the great mountain drives in New South Wales. The campground spreads across a large grass area with sites nestled among trees for shade. Basic facilities include long drop toilets, firepits, and picnic tables. The setting delivers quiet, nature-filled surroundings when crowds are light, though fishing competitions can pack the place. Kayaking is a highlight here, with a launch point at the southern end of the dam. The water stays freezing cold unless you paddle about a kilometre downstream. Fishing opportunities attract anglers looking to throw a line in. Conditions vary significantly with dam levels. When low, exposed black mud creates unpleasant smells and a run-down appearance. On clear nights, the starry skies are spectacular. The area can be windy and cold, and campers should prepare for flies, mosquitos, and hard ground. The campground could benefit from undercover picnic areas for weather protection.
