SUGARWORLD PARKLANDS

Public BBQ

Sugarworld Parklands proved a delightful surprise during my Edmonton visit, though it's clearly showing its age like an old uncle at a family barbecue. The fully fenced playground kept the littlies safely contained while I fired up one of the free BBQs - though I'd recommend arriving early before the concrete turns into a foot-scorching griddle by midday. The resident peacocks strutted about like they owned the place (which, frankly, they probably do), adding unexpected charm to what's essentially a family park with delusions of grandeur. The tropical fruit displays throughout the grounds were genuinely impressive, turning a simple picnic into an impromptu botany lesson. Yes, the facilities could use some serious TLC, and the café's offerings won't win any culinary awards, but there's something endearingly authentic about this slightly weathered gem. Pack your own esky, slap on extra sunscreen, and embrace the controlled chaos of Australian family recreation at its most honest.
