SOUTHERN ROAD RESERVE

Public BBQ

Southern Road Reserve reveals itself as one of those delightfully unpretentious neighbourhood gems that Australians do so well. Tucked behind the local preschool, this modest playground manages to pack considerable charm into its unassuming footprint. The free barbecues shelter beneath sensible covered areas - a thoughtful touch that acknowledges Melbourne's famously fickle weather. The play equipment strikes an admirably ambitious note, perhaps erring on the challenging side for the toddler brigade, but offering genuine adventure for school-aged explorers. Open space spreads generously around the installations, providing that essential Australian requirement: room to move. The climbing frames and slides possess a robust, no-nonsense character that suggests they'll outlast several generations of enthusiastic young users. One does note the absence of public conveniences - a minor oversight that requires advance planning for longer visits. Still, there's something refreshing about a place that focuses entirely on its primary mission: letting children be gloriously, energetically children while parents enjoy a proper barbecue in decent shelter.
