ROY AMER RESERVE

Public BBQ

Roy Amer Reserve proved to be one of those delightful suburban discoveries that makes you wonder why you hadn't visited sooner. This compact park wraps around six small ponds connected by flat, pram-friendly walking tracks that meander past an impressive array of wildlife. Australian pelicans and white ibis patrol the water's edge with the sort of proprietorial air that suggests they've been running the place for decades, while rainbow fish dart about beneath the surface and white-faced herons strike poses that would make a yoga instructor weep with envy. The facilities are refreshingly practical - clean public toilets, plenty of bench seating scattered about, and a small playground that keeps the children occupied while parents contemplate the surprisingly peaceful duck-watching opportunities. The on-site café serves decent coffee and welcomes dogs, which seems only fair given the number of four-legged locals who clearly consider this their morning constitutional route. While there's no playground equipment to speak of beyond the basics, the natural entertainment of turtles, ducks, and frogs more than compensates. Just remember to bring proper duck food - apparently bread is off the menu these days.
