REMEMBERANCE PARK

Public BBQ

Tucked behind the Australian War Memorial, this contemplative space carries the weight of history while offering some of Canberra's finest views. Established in 1978 to mark the Armistice's 60th anniversary, Remembrance Park serves as both memorial and gateway to adventure. The Kokoda Remembrance Trail begins here, winding up Mt Ainslie's slopes - though I'd mind the steep drops along the way. What strikes me most is the juxtaposition: solemn reflection meets suburban barbecue. The park's facilities are practical - fresh water taps, decent BBQ spots - while kangaroos graze nearby as if this were the most natural thing in the world. From the thoughtfully placed benches, Canberra spreads below in orderly splendour.
