PIONEER PARK

Public BBQ

Tucked away in Cootamundra, Pioneer Park presents itself as one of those pleasantly unassuming spots that manages to be several things to several people, though not always successfully. The park's abundance of trees creates a lovely canopy for picnicking, though navigation becomes rather like a woodland treasure hunt thanks to missing signage at higher elevations. The facilities impress: new, clean toilets that have clearly earned their reputation as a reliable pit stop for road travellers, alongside free BBQs that actually work,a small miracle in the world of public amenities. The walking trails wind through dense bushland, offering proper bushwalking for those who fancy it, though one does need a reasonable sense of direction. While the park bills itself as accommodating overnight camping, the reality proves more nuanced. Day visitors will find it perfectly charming for a barbie and a stretch of the legs, but caravanners might discover the "free camping" comes with the challenge of actually finding somewhere level to park. The lookout, when you eventually locate it despite the poor signposting, rewards the effort with decent views. Pioneer Park succeeds admirably as a day-use destination, just don't expect GPS-level wayfinding.
