NITMILUK (KATHERINE) GORGE

Public BBQ

Thirty kilometres from Katherine, this spectacular sandstone gorge system carved by the Katherine River is the centrepiece of Nitmiluk National Park. Guided river cruises run up through the gorges, with Indigenous guides sharing stories of the country and stopping at beaches to view ancient rock art. Freshwater crocodiles are a common sight along the water. The walk up to the lookout is steep with plenty of steps, but manageable if you take breaks, and it is well worth it at sunset. Bring water and a hat. A cafe near the visitor centre handles lunch and there is an adjoining caravan park with a pool. Heavy wet seasons can close the upper gorges, so cruises sometimes run only as far as the first one. Booking ahead is recommended.
