MELVILLE CAVES PICNIC AREA

Public BBQ

A magical spot in the granite country just out of Wedderburn, with magnificent rock outcrops, caves to explore and children able to scramble about among the boulders for hours. There is a good undercover area with a fire at each end, plenty of picnic tables, small barbecue firepits dotted around and decent parking, plus camping up on the mountain. The walking is the real draw: the Southern Loop runs just over eight kilometres on a well-groomed trail, about three hours at a leisurely pace, and the Southern Lookout track is beautiful and easy enough for young children. The direct climb to the caves from the picnic area is short and steep with fine views, though the path is overgrown in places with prickly thistles and awkward for older walkers - there is an easier route a little further up the road. The toilets are primitive.
