MACCULLOCHS REST AREA WESTBOUND

Public BBQ

A large free camp on the Barrier Highway with plenty of room to pull up and stay as long as you like. There is a gas barbecue, picnic tables, a good number of shaded seating areas, bins, and a book exchange kept in an old fridge. The playground is fenced and covered, which is rare out here. Telstra reception is decent on the eastern side. Two things to prepare for: there is no power and no water at all, and the long drop toilets divide opinion sharply - occasionally found clean, more often not, so bring your own paper. Bees gather at the toilet looking for water. It gets extremely hot in summer. Otherwise it is quiet apart from a few trucks, with goats bleating and apostle birds about in numbers.
