LLOYD JONES WEIR

Public BBQ

Stumbling upon Lloyd Jones Weir feels rather like discovering a well-kept secret that everyone's forgotten to keep secret. This donation-based camping spot beside the Alice River operates on that wonderfully Australian principle of trust – leave what you can, take what you need, and everyone wins. The facilities here would shame many paid campgrounds: spotless flushing toilets that don't assault your senses, potable water on tap, and a proper dump station. The gum tree-lined river creates a natural amphitheatre of shade, though you'll want decent repellent for the sandflies who clearly didn't get the memo about sharing nicely. What strikes you most is the space – acres of flat ground perfect for morning walks or spotting the local kangaroo population, who seem perpetually bemused by human visitors. The weir itself, though not flowing during drier spells, maintains a tranquil dignity that makes evening fishing sessions feel almost meditative. The trading library adds a charming touch, and the fact that travellers consistently praise the cleanliness speaks volumes about the camping community's collective conscience. It's refreshingly dog-friendly too, because good spots should welcome all family members.
