LIONS PARK

Public BBQ

Stumbled upon this unexpected gem in the middle of South Australia's mining country, and honestly, it's like finding a cold beer in the desert - which, incidentally, you can actually do here during footy season. Lions Park transforms into something quite magical when the local AFL kicks off; utes backed up to the fence, esky lids doubling as tables, and the sort of community atmosphere that makes you wonder why city folk pay premium prices for manufactured experiences. The facilities tick all the right boxes - proper barbecue setups with decent shade, a basketball court that's seen better days but still shoots true, and enough grass to make you forget you're surrounded by red dirt. The playground's got that new soft-fall surface, though the toilets could use attention from someone who actually cares about hygiene. Fair warning about the local wildlife: the crows here have developed advanced pickpocketing skills. They'll liberate your lunch faster than a politician's promise evaporates. But there's something deeply Australian about sharing your snag with a cheeky corvid in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the improbable green of an outback park.
