LIONS LOOKOUT

Public BBQ

Lions Lookout promised panoramic vistas but delivered an unexpected lesson in nature's persistence. The winding ascent up Bent Street leads to what must have once been Murwillumbah's premier viewing spot, though these days it's more accurately described as a very expensive way to examine tree bark up close. The irony isn't lost on me,a lookout where you can't actually look out at anything except an impressive wall of vegetation that's clearly won its battle against council maintenance schedules. The trees have staged what appears to be a successful coup, transforming scenic overlooks into an intimate study of leaf patterns. Still, there's something charmingly defiant about the place. The barbecue facilities work perfectly well, the picnic tables invite a leisurely lunch, and there's a playground for the kids. It's become less about the destination and more about the journey, though parking remains as challenging as finding the actual view. If you're after a quiet spot for a barbie with a side of gentle disappointment, Lions Lookout delivers exactly that.
