Public BBQ

An easy-to-reach bush camp in Langi Ghiran, free as of 2026, with open-area camping rather than defined sites, fire pits with hotplates, tables and clean drop toilets with paper supplied. There is no water at all, for drinking or washing, and no rubbish bins, so arrive fully prepared. The ground is not very flat, so bring levellers; there is room for caravans, but it fills quickly once a few groups arrive. The road in is badly corrugated and worth taking slowly with a well-secured load. A two-kilometre walk leads up to the old reservoir, slippery after rain, and there are waterfalls when it has been wet. Kangaroos come through at dawn and dusk, the birdlife is excellent and echidnas turn up. Dogs are not permitted, whatever other sources say. Rock paintings are about seven kilometres away.

You should first check with Ararat council about the rules and restrictions.

Generally, it is permissible to utilize your own gas BBQ, provided it remains under continuous supervision. However, the usage of Charcoal BBQ's is typically restricted, with the exception of parks equipped with designated charcoal disposal bins.
