JOYNTON SMITH PARKLAND

Public BBQ

Joynton Smith Parkland stretches along Belconnen's western shore, where the lake does most of the talking, which is to say, not much, and therein lies its charm. The parkland manages the rare feat of being genuinely peaceful despite hosting an impressive roster of facilities that would typically attract pandemonium. The barbecue shelters are scattered generously throughout, all free and reliably clean, with enough undercover areas to outlast Canberra's famously indecisive weather. Parking proves refreshingly abundant, even accommodating RVs without the usual spatial gymnastics. The boat ramp launches everything from kayaks to proper vessels, while a dedicated bike training area lets youngsters master two wheels without the terror of traffic. Children's play equipment appears in multiple locations, complemented by an outdoor gym for those who've already conquered the playground years. The lake itself offers swimming, fishing, and sunset watching of the sort that justifies standing still for once. Public toilets maintain surprising cleanliness standards, and the whole operation somehow achieves "family-friendly" without sacrificing tranquility.
