INDEPENDENCE POINT

Public BBQ

Independence Point reveals itself as one of those quietly charming spots that Kangaroo Island does so well - a place where expectations matter less than what you actually find. The lake sits rather emptily most days, which somehow makes the resident seals and pelicans seem more proprietorial about their patch. What catches your attention isn't the sparse historical significance, but the unexpected theatre of birdlife: black swans gliding with theatrical dignity while various sea birds conduct their daily business with admirable efficiency. The picnic area tucked to the left offers that particular Australian combination of practical amenities and beautiful views, though you'll want to plan your toilet stops elsewhere. The real treasure here is Julian's ambitious project in the big hall - reconstructing a 224-year-old Kangaroo Island sailship with infectious enthusiasm. It's the sort of wonderfully obsessive endeavour that makes travel worthwhile. Easy access, peaceful surroundings, and enough greenery to make you forget the world exists beyond this quiet corner of water and sky.
