HOPKINS FALLS SCENIC RESERVE

Public BBQ

Hopkins Falls turned out to be one of those pleasantly unpretentious spots that doesn't oversell itself - which, given my tendency to arrive at "spectacular" destinations only to find a trickle and a car park, was refreshingly honest. The waterfall, while not exactly Niagara, provided a decent tumble down weathered rocks, and the viewing platforms offered multiple vantage points without requiring mountaineering skills. The facilities were surprisingly comprehensive: proper toilets, barbecue areas, and enough parking to accommodate half of Victoria. A short walk down well-maintained steps leads to the base, though the upper platforms are perfectly adequate for those preferring to admire nature from a respectful distance. The interpretive signs proved genuinely informative, covering both Aboriginal history and the area's claim as one of Australia's widest waterfalls. What struck me most was the unhurried atmosphere - families picnicking, the occasional cow providing entertainment from adjacent paddocks, and enough space that even on busier days, one doesn't feel like part of a queue. It's the sort of place that delivers exactly what it promises: a pleasant hour or two beside falling water, with all the amenities needed for a proper barbie.
