GOULBURN HISTORIC WATERWORKS

Public BBQ

This historic site, home to the southern hemisphere's oldest steam-powered pump still in its original location, offers an unexpected discovery along Goulburn's riverside. The beautifully preserved 19th-century waterworks building showcases Victorian-era craftsmanship, where utilitarian purpose meets architectural elegance. Knowledgeable volunteers bring the meticulously restored machinery to life, explaining every detail of the working steam engine with genuine enthusiasm. The museum operates on voluntary cash donations, making it remarkably accessible. Beyond the technical marvels, the grounds provide peaceful riverside walks where black swans glide past, and gardens invite quiet contemplation. A children's play area keeps younger visitors entertained while adults explore the impressive boilers and engineering displays. The attached cafe opens on special steaming days. Whether stopping briefly while passing through town or dedicating an afternoon to the river walk and museum tour, this preserved piece of industrial heritage delivers far more than its modest profile suggests,a testament to an era when even functional buildings demanded beauty.
