GAHAN RESERVE

Public BBQ

Gahan Reserve presents itself as a well-positioned community hub where playground upgrades have clearly been prioritized over basic amenities. The recently renovated playground equipment draws families throughout the day, with safe installations that cater to toddlers through older children. A quarter basketball court doubles as a netball space, while expansive grassed areas accommodate everything from casual ball games to birthday celebrations. The dedicated off-leash dog area transforms the reserve during evening hours, when local dog owners converge for impromptu social gatherings among the palm trees that surprisingly enhance the suburban setting. Morning visits around 9am typically offer easier parking access. Practical considerations reveal the reserve's most glaring oversight: the absence of public toilets forces visitors to rely on the nearby library facilities. While water taps and seating areas support picnicking, this limitation affects longer visits and party planning. The maternal child health centre contributes additional play spaces, including a sandpit with toys. Transport connectivity proves excellent, with the train station and Hoddle Street providing convenient access. Despite maintenance issues with some equipment and frequently empty poo bag dispensers, the reserve succeeds as a multi-purpose community space where children's laughter mingles with the enthusiastic barking of off-leash dogs.
