EUREKA DRIVE PARK

Public BBQ

Tucked into the suburban sprawl of Manor Lakes, this compact recreational gem proves that good things indeed come in small packages - though one does wonder if the council's playground designer has something against children of normal height. The park centers around a sensible collection of undercover tables paired with free BBQs, creating that quintessentially Australian setup where families can properly barbecue while the kids exhaust themselves nearby. The enclosed play area sits beneath generous shade sails, a thoughtful touch in this sun-baked corner of Victoria. There's a climbing wall for the more adventurous youngsters and a separate zone for the toddler brigade - though I must note the swings seem calibrated for a race of giants, and their slippery seats suggest someone skipped the user-testing phase. The basketball court adds a nice touch for older kids, though the whole affair won't win awards for scale. Still, there's something genuinely appealing about this unpretentious setup. It's the sort of place where you can fire up a barbie, keep the children occupied, and enjoy that increasingly rare commodity - a genuinely relaxed afternoon without pretense or fuss.
