DERBY VISITOR CENTRE

Public BBQ

Derby's visitor centre sits strategically beside Lions Park, a sprawling shady square that immediately signals this is a town that understands the value of decent shelter from the Kimberley sun. The modern building houses an impressive collection of local arts and crafts that goes well beyond the usual tourist trinkets - though those are available too, naturally. The staff possess that rare combination of local knowledge and genuine enthusiasm for sharing it. During my visit, a young woman behind the counter proved remarkably well-informed about the region's attractions, offering practical advice with refreshing candour. The interpretive displays showcase Derby's unique character, while the boab-themed media centre provides engaging local information. What struck me most was the centre's role as a proper information hub rather than merely a souvenir shop. Quality items fill the shelves, and collectors will appreciate the commemorative coins tucked away to one side. It's the sort of place that successfully serves both curious travellers and locals alike - though one might want to double-check opening hours, as staffing can apparently be somewhat irregular. Still, when operational, it delivers exactly what a good visitor centre should: knowledge, local flavour, and a proper welcome to this distinctive corner of Western Australia.
