CHINCHILLA WEIR

Public BBQ

Chinchilla Weir delivers one of Queensland's finest free camping experiences, where visitors discover immaculate facilities that rival paid caravan parks. The weir offers both powered and unpowered sites on a first-come basis, with savvy travellers arriving before noon to secure the coveted powered spots overlooking the water. Clean flush toilets, sheltered BBQ areas, and running water create a surprisingly civilised bush camping atmosphere. The real drawcard emerges at sunset, when spectacular golden light transforms the weir into a photographer's paradise. By mid-afternoon, the area bustles with caravans and day-trippers, but early arrivals enjoy peaceful mornings perfect for fishing, kayaking, or swimming in the adjacent creek. Local entrepreneurs even deliver quality firewood directly to campsites. Operating on an honour system with donations collected at the town information centre, this council-managed gem proves that excellent facilities needn't cost a fortune. Maximum two-night stays ensure everyone gets their turn at this beloved stopover.
