BLUE RANGE HUT

Public BBQ

Tucked away in the ACT's eucalyptus embrace, Blue Range Hut occupies a site with rather more gravitas than your typical camping spot - it once housed Italian prisoners during World War II, though today's visitors are considerably more voluntary. The spacious heritage hut anchors a remarkably well-maintained campground where the facilities work properly (a minor miracle in itself) and the drop toilets maintain an admirably civilised standard. A small creek meanders through the grounds when nature cooperates, though it has an unfortunate habit of disappearing during dry spells - presumably taking its water obligations less seriously than the groundskeepers take their maintenance duties. The surrounding bush offers excellent walking trails, whilst the large grassy sites accommodate everything from Scout troops to solitary bikepackers, all drawn by the tranquil remoteness and the promise of spectacular stargazing when Canberra's lights fade to memory. The access road demands a modicum of attention, but the reward is a genuinely peaceful retreat where the biggest challenge is remembering to lock the gate behind you.
